I had a dream the other night that I was walking in a garden. This garden was laid out on either side of a stone path and no matter how hard I tried, I kept trampling the flowers. I would straighten and water them and watch the plants grow for a time but in the end they would all die. It seemed like years of hard work that all amounted to nothing.
Suddenly a hand reached out to me and offered help over to a new path. As I walked it, it didn't matter what I did to the flowers. I could step, kick, or pull at them and still they refused to be destroyed. Instead of being maddening it seemed entirely comforting. I had worked so hard on my little garden and yet nothing I did helped the little plants grow. Here I was in a place where I didn't have to work; everything was already done and nothing I did would stop it from happening.
Now bear with me as this is how my mind associates things. I'm at a time of my life where I'm working through several aspects of my life. Relationships, getting ready to graduate college, finding internships and a job, balancing friends and work; it's all overwhelming at times. However I always find myself giving the same advice to others and not really doing all that well at following it myself. It usually starts with God has a plan. We can kick and scream and fight but it's already been laid out. We can see it as frustrating or choose to see it as comforting because no matter how far we fall, the plan is there. He sees and knows everything and in my weakest state, He has a plan.
So my garden dream was a comfort in these days of wandering. It reminds me that anything I touch will wilt and fall away because thus far, everything has. However God is a gardener and everything He touches will flourish and grow even more beautiful than I can ever imagine. It's in His hands so why worry?

Be anxious for nothing
Going from school to home is always a weird time of transitioning from me. I attend school eighteen hours away so I save trips home for Christmas and summer. This means that I spend four months at a time essentially on my own and deciding what I want to do with my days. While at school, my nights are usually fairly eventful. I like night drives, studying at coffee shops, and hanging out with friends until the wee hours. Here's where the transitioning comes in. Being at home means a lot of nights spent with my family at home. Not that I mind this at all! It's just strange to go from picking up and leaving to go to the lake at midnight to Psych marathons.
To be honest it makes me quite antsy. Camp starts in a few weeks and I know this means long nights with drives and friends and my man next to me but right now it's odd. I have to keep reminding myself to be still. I need to remember how little time my parents have spent with me over the last three years I have been away at school. On my ring finger I wear a ring with the words "Be anxious for nothing Phil 4:6-7". It's my constant reminder to stay in the moment. Long nights will come.
So if you struggle with not living in the moment as much as I do, let this be your reminder. Be anxious for nothing. Whether it be your friends are all up and getting married or everyone you know has graduated and left you behind; you're time will come. Right now you are exactly where you need to be. You won't get these days back.

Welcome Summer
I'm positive I am not the first person and will not be the last to say this, but college absolutely drains all of my time. Of course I work, go out with friends, and take time to live but many parts of my life get pushed to the back burner during the school months. One of these just so happens to unfortunately be music. This means that during the summer I spend a lot of my time just catching back up on new music, CD releases, and exploring the hidden parts of Youtube.
One of my best friends, Baylen, and I are both music junkies and have had an ongoing music swap since freshman year. I don't like to admit it but he gives me pretty great artists to listen to. Tonight I was feeling the restlessness of not going on a late night drive since being at school. Almost as if he could sense it, he sent me Cherry by Luna Shadows. Everything about it is so lovely and exactly what I needed for my anxiousness. I then got curious about the Youtube channel it's on and found Swim by Valley. Now spoiler alert: it has been a very long time since a song has made me laugh out loud. This isn't a funny song in the slightest, it just made me that happy. If you are looking for some extra songs for your summer playlist then I recommend these two songs and the Youtube channel "IndieAir". If you are looking for stars out, windows down, your love sitting in the passenger seat then get ready to be pleasantly surprised. Let summer commence.

35 days
Ah the sweet smell of the semester winding down- or picking up? As it gets to the end I can never quite tell whether it slows down or speeds up. As of today there are 35 days remaining of my junior year of college and I have to say that some days I am ready and others I close my eyes and just hold on tight.
Being in a place for too long makes me antsy. During the school year I work at my school's rock wall and sitting in the small place 18 hours a week can drive me insane on slow nights. Working in the rock wall is kind of like life for me. When things are the same day after day, I'm ready to move. I have to stand up and walk away for a little bit. The end of the semester is very much like this. I'm getting tired of sitting behind a desk and studying for something new every night. I'm ready for late nights at camp with my man in the car next to me. I need late night drives and swimming pools and no anxiety from impending tests.
There's 35 days remaining of this semester and even though I am very much burnt out; I want to make it worth something. I don't want to count down the days until the weekend or the summer. I want to study hard while I can and pass the exams coming up with ease.
So here's to 35 days and not counting I suppose.

Locking the Door
Being a college student, I live in a dorm room on campus. I am surrounded by a variety of different ladies who I interact with on an everyday basis. My dorm in particular is set up in a suite style where there are two room and a bathroom conjoining them. I live by myself this semester and therefore have half of the suite to myself. Stay with me here because I promise there is a point to my ramblings. This morning I was in a hurry and when leaving the bathroom I forgot to press in the lock. I don't lock the door because I distrust my suite mates, but more because it is a habit I have picked up because of freshman year prank wars. Now, I've lived in the same exact room for five semesters and I pretty much have locking the door down. Lately however I've noticed that when I walk past it a few minutes later, it's unlocked. I can pretty much attribute this to the fact that even though it's mostly an unconscious act, I get so caught up in whatever else I'm doing in the moment that it just slips by.
Today this moment of realization of the door being unlocked occurred again. I left the bathroom, got dressed, walked by and stared it the door for a few seconds before re-locking it. It got me thinking. How many other areas in my life am I just working on auto-pilot through? How many friends, family members, and class mates are surrounding me that I've forgotten to pay particular attention to under the assumption that I already have?
It's such a little moment in my day that actually hit pretty hard. I think about all the times where I've read a text without responding or even opened a snapchat and swore to reply later. However what's going on with the person on the other side? Maybe what seems like a small part of my day is so much larger in comparison for them. Perhaps while I'm just going through the motions, there's someone I'm interacting with that I'm doing as good as a job with as I had thought I was. That's pretty upsetting.
So take the second to slow down and lock the door in your life. For me it's sending the text without reason to or sitting down and writing the letters I never got to. Or even as simply as recognizing the students around me as much as I did freshmen year.
Lock the door and open opportunities that you wouldn't have if you were running on auto-pilot.

New Semesters and New Beginnings
With the start of each semester the promise of fresh beginnings always follows. Personally, I love the uncertainty of how the next four months are going to turn out. Each semester has brought about different challenges and new relationships that have all helped me grow in some unpredictable way. This past one was all about a job I had wanted for two years, new friendships, a difficult roommate, and a long distance relationship. However, about halfway through and I start longing for new classes, new professors, and the feeling of starting over again. It always seems to hit around the same time for me. Classes are going great and then out of the blue my heart starts willing for the semester to end.
This semester I want it to be different. I don't want to count down the days but instead focus on the ones I have left. Being a second semester junior means I have three semesters left in college. Judging by how quickly the last one went, I can only imagine the next few will only go faster.
I don't always struggle with this. It's usually when I'm taking certain classes that just don't seem to appeal to me. Of late this was chemistry. Six weeks into chemistry and I was drawing new bonds I liked to call "Olive Bonds" on my desk. This came to be when my lab partner and I understood about as much of the vegetable as we did about whatever bond we were learning about at the time.
So if you are in the same boat as me; I hope you take a step back with me. Together we can embrace each new weekday in the classroom as a fantastic learning opportunity. I hope you take that elective you want, spend too much time wandering around new streets, and go to bed at a decent time during final's week. I hope all of the other semesters don't even come close to how awesome this one is going to be. You got this.

Winter Adventures
I've always been the kind of person that gets in the car and wherever I end up is where I spend the day. This bodes well with the fact that over the years I've found that unplanned dates are the best kind. The dates that become an idea the moment you get there have become some of my most treasured memories. I have always chalked it up to being a poor planner but recently I decided that it has less to do with planning and more to do with the fact that I like to see where things take me. Everything is planned at school and work and when I get a chance to break away from routine I jump at the chance.
Luckily I have found a man that feels the same and doesn't mind getting in the car to a blank map and a full tank of gas. That's where we found ourselves today when he made the decision to visit a wooden park he had played at as a child.
Perfect ideas are never quite what they seem however. He wasn't in my car for more than two minutes when he began fiddling with random items he could get his hands on. This is when he came across my pepper spray and due to its unusual shape, decided to try it out. Before I could answer his question about what it was, pepper spray coated my windshield, pepper hit the back of my throat, and the sweetest and most confused face met me from across my center console. Luckily we hadn't left his driveway yet and were able to clean it up and be on our way.
Eventually we made it to the park and I've realized that nothing makes you feel more like a child again than climbing across rope walkways and tunnels that are not made for adult heights. Luckily everyone is back to school and so alone we were able to explore without feeling like we were make anyone feel uneasy. After we had made our way through the whole park, a walk seemed to be the next logical idea.
Geocaching has quickly become something we do together since we're usually in an unusual spot and so the walk became foraging through underbrush and thorns in the woods. After emerging on the other side we came across the paved path that clearly would have made more sense. He then realized that he used to run on these trails in high school and decided he wanted to show me a place he used to run. It was a path through the woods that led to a creek with step stones across. The half-frozen creek became the perfect target for tossed stones and conversation. More geocaching rounded out our adventure and then we both headed home.
What I've found is that is doesn't take a lot to have a good time with the right person. A few stones and a frozen creek was all that was needed. These are the kinds of days that I hope I wake up remembering thirty years from now.

Influenster: NYC New York Color
As you guys have heard many times before, I live for Influenster. Recently, I was given the opportunity to test the NYC New York Color mascara and eyeliner. When I choose makeup I am usually not that picky unless it comes to price; I like it cheap. But I was super excited to give this stuff a try! The first thing I noticed about the mascara was that it hardly clumped at all. The biggest fault I find in mascaras is clumping and so I was pleasantly surprised at the lack thereof. The mascara was also long lasting and held up throughout the summer heat of the day. It also didn't make my eyelashes look freakish which was a plus.
The eyeliner was also a plus for me! What I liked about it was how smooth it was going on. It was dark which was awesome and also held up for the whole day.
Overall, I would definitely recommend that you give these products a try. They are worth it for the price and you can't beat the quality!

Hiking the Days Away
If you guys are anything like me, you get the winter blues pretty badly too. It is so difficult to stay motivated during the colder months. Once it warms up though I want to spend all of my time outside! This last weekend I was sitting in the cafeteria with my best friend and we were contemplating what to do for the day. It was slightly chilly and overcast so we weren't too keen on being outside. However, we both a text from a mutual friend wondering if we wanted to go hiking with her and another friend of ours. It was the perfect opportunity!
Where we were headed, I had been to my freshman year and it is one of my favorite spots. There is a broken down castle, a cave, wildlife, and this one spot where you have to climb over 300 steps! What was amazing about the day is that the sun came out when we arrived and it turned into a gorgeous 70 degree day; perfect hiking weather! We were lucky enough to see beavers and several turtles sunning on the rocks.
The next day, I was asked by my good friend, Baylen, if I wanted to go to the same park and hike with him. This time we took different trails and I was able to see another part of the state park that I had never been on before. Again it was a gorgeous day and I got to see otters for the first time in the wild.

The Kind Word Challenge
Over winter break I went through a bit of a withdrawal from just about everything. I needed a break from school and people and kindly enough my family let me. For the entire month and a half I was able to relax and prepare for the last stretch before summer break; it was heaven. Right before I was meant to fly back to school, my dad pulled me aside and I was able to have a heart to heart with him. One of the things he reminded me was that kind words can fix just about everything. One of my worst bad habits is how awesome I am at comebacks. This however means that I can hurt people pretty deeply with very few words. Over the years I have been able to tame it immensely but every now and then it slips out. Because of the stress of last semester, this habit had been creeping up on me and I was becoming overwhelmed.
My dad is pretty great about bringing me back to earth. He gives me the space I need and then lets me talk it out. Usually, he can get me to see something from a different angle than I had previously. It is pretty easy to notice when other people are treating you badly. It's harder to see how you are treating other's badly. Every now and then I just have to remind myself to take a step back and look at the situation differently. Just because I feel like I'm not being treated fairly does not mean that I have the right to attack. Kind words have done wonders for me in diffusing situations.
One thing I want to challenge you to do is to take a step back. Are there any places in your life that you can lend a kind word? When I walk into my cafeteria, I always try to hold a conversation with the student working the front desk. One of the girls stopped me one time after I asked her how she was and told me that she appreciated the way I always conversed with her. To me, it was of little importance but it made an impact on her. I never realize how much of an impact I can have with just a few words. Angry words are not the only words that stick with people. So my challenge for you is to lend a kind word. Tell the stranger on the street that you dig their sweet sweater. A classmate got a new haircut? Maybe they're self conscious and need someone to tell them how much they rock their new hair. Kind words may seem insignificant to you, but little words here and there could make a huge impact on the world.

Influenster Product Review
So if you have been around here long enough, you would know that I swear by Influenster. My latest VoxBox contained these three beauties! I absolutely love when I don't have to purchase hair products since they can be so costly.
I was asked to try out and review the Dessange Paris Oleo Miracle Replenishing shampoo, conditioner, and oil. At first I was a bit skeptical because the smell was quite strong. I'm sure it was just the oils but once I got used to it I quite enjoy it. I'm used to floral scents but this has become a new favorite!
My hair routine is pretty basic. I have long and thick hair so I shampoo twice and condition once. That's it! I don't usually put anything extra in because I can't stand greasy or heavy hair. I was impressed with both the shampoo and the conditioner. After my shower my hair felt lighter and much softer. I have strayed away from straightening or curling my hair so often, but you can definitely still see damage! I really enjoyed the way that these products softened that damage and made it less noticeable. The oil however was not what I expected! When I think oil I immediately think greasy. The oil however made my hair feel even softer and gave it a shine that was much appreciated.
I would definitely recommend this product. It can be a bit pricey but the results are worth it!

Positive Thoughts Part 1
Can I be honest for a moment? Being positive all of the time sucks. It can be so emotionally draining to feel like you can never be down. Does that make sense? When I first came to school I was a ray of sunshine. I had my moments certainly, but mostly I was fairly cheery. I am still happy but over the last few months a lot of events have dampened my mood. It became difficult to always be cheerful or positive and when everyone expects that of you, it's draining. I never felt like I could have a bad day because others would call me out on it or say that they were going through something worse. Why is it that we are so quick to say that we are worse off than the person next to us? It's like a competition to have a crappier life! So you feel better because you have a worse life than another, but really it is a bad thing because you're life is not good. It all hurts my head. For once I wish that instead of comparing two and two, we would listen with a caring heart and then be heard by an equally caring individual.
Because I am a fairly competitive individual, I fall into this trap. When really, maybe an event is taking a toll on someone differently than it would me. Lately this is something that I have been working on. I have been trying to place a kind word somewhere maybe I would not have before or attempt to make someone feel like they are being heard. In this way, my hope is that person will pass this on. If they don't, that's alright. I just hope to lift one person even slightly.
Learning to find the middle ground between being positive and negative can be tricky. I struggle with it every single day. Everybody struggles and everyone needs to feel heard. So if you're reading this, I hope you know that it is okay to have a bad day. It's normal to not always feel like you can smile. Do not let anyone tell you that you are not allowed to hurt or be sad. On another note, don't let anyone tell you that they hurt more than you. Yes, the circumstances might be different than yours. No, that does not mean that your troubles are insignificant. Be compassionate but don't allow yourself to be told you aren't allowed to hurt. Take a mental health day because it is good for your soul. Recoup and get back out there.

Everyone Needs a Best Friend Like This
As you may have noticed from past posts, I go to a college that is well over a thousand miles away from home. Because of this, I have had to really put myself out there in school in order to feel at home away from home. I've met so many good friends this way and it has really put me into perspective about different people. I'm incredibly thankful to all of the people who have welcomed me into their lives and their homes.
One friend in particular I met freshman year because we were on the softball team together. She was actually the second player I met and she was the sweetest one right off of the bat. An example of this is about two weeks into the semester, mind you she hardly knew me, she invited me and another player out with her family for her birthday because she knew both of us were from out of the state. That was the sweetest thing that anyone had every done for me. It was just a preview of what a kind-hearted person she is.
Fast forward to first semester of sophomore year. We were both having a particularly trying week. She was upset about her boyfriend and I wasn't much better. Because of this we were in her room and feeling pretty miserable about ourselves. One of our ways to fix problems like this is slushies. We enjoy slushies late at night because that is when they taste the best. Nothing is better than a giant plastic sized cup of sugar at three in the morning. On this particular night, we were dressed to impress. I had slept over in her room so I had riding boots, yoga pants, and a baggy sweater. While she had sneakers and tall socks over tights. This began the tradition of wearing whatever we have on to go out and fetch slushies-no matter how ridiculous we look. Honestly I felt so much better after that. It was so refreshing to look ridiculous and I'm so thankful for a best friend who is willing to look like a fool for me.

Personal Struggles
Lately circumstances in some of my relationships have caused me to take a lot of steps back. It's certainly not an easy thing to balance your needs and others. For me it feels like if I give in I am backing down and not being true to myself. I definitely struggle with this on a daily basis and because of this at least one relationship has struggled. This has forced me to reevaluate the things that I want, need, and the things that the people in the relationship with me want and need.
One thing I realized was that just because you're using kind words instead of yelling, it does not mean that you're weak or that you don't feel strongly about the issue- just that it is counter-productive to be loud. When people yell at me, I tend to shut them out. It's taken me a while to realize that the same is true for if I yell. Nobody wants to be screamed at and then be forced to admit they are wrong. This is one aspect that I have been working on.
Pointing fingers. I despise the thinking that anyone will force me to do anything. But when I get mad, the blame is immediately on the other person because it must be their fault because they made me mad. I definitely struggle with this all time and am working on being patient and learning when it is worth fighting.
Staying quiet or walking away from an argument is not easy. I've learned over the past few years that I do better when I can walk away from an argument and talk about it later when I am calm. However this can also lead others to feel like they are being shut out. I'm working on finding the happy medium.
Apologizing doesn't mean you're wrong and I struggle with that. I'm not perfect but I'm working to be more productive when upset.
Always,
A

Unilever Dry Spray Review
Now I'm a pretty picky deodorant and I've had a hard time finding one that I really like. I usually prefer to use Secret deodorant which can be pretty expensive so I was really excited to try out a different brand.
The first thing that kind of threw me off was the fact that it was a spray. Although the bottle is very attractive looking, I wasn't sure how I would feel having to spray on deodorant. I managed to get it on, only managing to get it in a few other places, and was good to go for the day. I wanted to test this out on a normal day and so made the decision to wear it on a class day where I could really trust the results.
First off, I did enjoy the scent. I've read a few other reviews from other bloggers that it was too strong but I didn't find it to be that overwhelming.
Secondly, the deodorant seemed to hold up well throughout the day and I never felt sticky or damp.
I would definitely recommend this product if you're willing to try something a little out of the normal.

Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate
So this isn't the first time on this blog that I've raved about Influenster's VoxBox's and it certainly won't be the last! This time I got to try out Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate and for somebody who doesn't like hot drinks, I love the way it tastes! My boyfriend was my official test taster and even he gave it a two thumbs up. We decided to try it out during studying for finals week and it was a great study break. What I loved about this was that it wasn't so sweet that is was overwhelming. I will definitely be buying this in the future!

Organizing Your Planner

Let's face it- there are million and one ways to organize your thoughts. You can jot them down, make a mental note, ask someone to remind you, or set an alarm that will accidentally go off during a test. My first semester of college I really just went with the flow. I wrote everything in my planner in pencil and left it at that. Now however I found that method to be confusing at times. When everything is in the same color I tend to overlook important things just because I can't tell that I need to do them!
Step 1: colors!
This semester I invested in a package of pretty colored pens in order to help me accomplish my goal of better organization. It seems to have really worked for me! The hardest part is refraining from quickly needing to write something down and writing something down in the wrong color. Once I established my color code I was well on my way to missing less deadlines.
Pink: Everything I absolutely need to get done by that day. This could include tests, homework, presentations, quizzes, or even doctor appointments.
Purple: I like to stay really involved on campus. I'm pretty well known among my friends as the go to person to ask about what there is to do on campus. Purple covers all campus activities including crafts, library nights, Christmas week activities, final's week activities, homecoming week activities, hall activities, or extra credit opportunities.
Dark Green: Now that I no longer play softball at my school, I like to add in extra workouts to my normal routine. At my school, we have free fitness classes and if we attend 20 we get a free t-shirt. Dark green keeps all of the fitness class times for the day in one place.
Light Green: Reminders to study are written in light green. A lot of the times I don't realize how close it is to a test until I'm right on top of it. By keeping these little reminders, I have it in the back of mind that I need to study earlier.
Blue: In blue I like to keep all of my personal notes. These could be date nights with Luke, birthdays, reminders to write letters, or that I need to make a phone call.
Orange: I use this one rarely, but it covers changes in the cafeteria's plans. Usually it's because we have to switch buildings due to faculty dinners or we're eating on the forum.
Black: In black I write my notes for class. These could include reminders that I need to have my laptop or that I need to ask a teacher a question.
When I first started my color coding I kept a sheet of paper in my planner to remind me which color went to what. However since I've been using it for a couple of months now I can easily write something down without having to remember which color is the correct one.
Step 2: It's not just enough to say that you are going to remember something. I've made that mistake too many times to count and have regretted it. If you think you need to write something down, do it the moment you find out about it and it will save you so much time in the long run.
Step 3: Personally I am a very hands on learner. One way that I help myself to remember things is to draw it or doodle next to the entry in order to make it stand out. I also like to make holiday's look festive with ghosts, Christmas trees and so forth!
Step 4: Be picky! One of my friends prefers to keep her planner on her phone while another likes to have a planner as big as a notebook. It all depends on what you like and you will only get the most out of what works best for you!
Whatever you find that works for you, stick with it! Even if it's as simple as leaving sticky notes around your dorm you are better off not messing with perfection. With these tips I've found that I manage time better as well as have more free time because I'm more on top of things!
What are some ways that have helped you to become a better student? Have you had to change them since you started highschool/college?
If this has helped or wasn't very helpful, please feel free to let me know in the comments below. I love to hear feedback!

Influenster: Resource Spring Water
I've posted a few entries about Influenster but it just proves how much I love it! One of the products I received for free in the mail to review was a bottle of Resource Spring Water. As soon as I opened the box I popped the bottle in the mail and waited for it to get cool before drinking. Later I went to get it and took it on the go with me to the gym. The bottle fit perfectly in my gym bag and even after opening didn't leak everywhere. Another feature was how clean the water tasted! I'm used to just grabbing water from the water fountains around campus so taking a break and drinking Resource was so refreshing. I don't tend to spend a lot of money on water from the store but I do believe I will be buying this on the regular!
Influenster: Swiss Miss Simply Cocoa
I posted a previous entry about how much I love Influenster and the love continues! I received all of the products mentioned below for free and all of the opinions of the products are my own. One of the items I got in the Moda VoxBox was the Swiss Miss Simply Cocoa. While I admit that I am not a huge fan of hot drinks, I was delighted to find that I adored the taste. My boyfriend on the other hand adores his hot chocolate and also loved this product! It was the perfect combination for one of our cozy Netflix date nights. My favorite part was how rich it was. Unlike other hot chocolates I have tasted in the past, it was not gritty at all. I loved the flavor all the way down to the bottom of the mug. Even though I am not crazy about hot drinks, this is something that I will continue to buy all winter long! I definitely recommend this for you if you like hot drinks or maybe even if you don't.
